A Statement from our Department to Students

Dear Anthropology Students, 

It is with great sadness that this week’s email must address the tragedy in Atlanta and the anti-Asian violence in San Francisco. 

The Department of Anthropology joins the voices of outrage at the recent murders in Atlanta, including six women of Asian descent, and we condemn the ongoing violence against Asian and Pacific Islander communities throughout the United States. The deeply rooted xenophobia, misogyny, white supremacy, and structural racism that are the foundations of this nation continue to fuel violence against racialized minorities and women.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, political activists and community organizations have documented nearly 3,800 hate incidences against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community (Stop AAPI Hate National Report, Feb 28, 2021 pdf). Women and the elderly have been disproportionately targeted in physical assaults (New Data on Anti-Asian Hate Incidents, Feb 9, 2021 pdf)

We stand with the AAPI community and with all of those who are committed to fighting for racial and social justice. Given that California leads the nation in documented hate crimes against AAPI individuals, and the recent attacks here in San Francisco (SF Chronicle), we ask everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviors.
