Overview

Speakers:

Valarie Contreras graduated from SFSU in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Communications. She carried out original research in archaeology and primatology, presenting her projects in the LCA Undergraduate Research Showcase. Valarie currently works at the California Academy of Sciences as the Data and Communications Coordinator in the Public Programs and Academy Volunteers department, and volunteers in the Anthropology Collections department. She is also a volunteer at the Mission Housing Development Corporation in San Francisco.

Benjamin Holt is a User Researcher for CamelBak’s User Research & Trend Department at the global headquarters in Petaluma. After completing an M.A. in medical anthropology at SFSU in 2021, Ben pivoted from public health to UX research. Ben demonstrated the value of anthropology to CamelBak’s design team enough to secure the first full-time entry-level UXR role at global HQ. 

Jack Mohr (B.A. Anthropology ’08, M.A. Sexuality Studies ’10) is the Health & Safety Manager at CSU Channel Islands. Following his time at SFSU, Jack moved to Toronto, Canada and spent close to a decade working in HIV/AIDS organizations as a health educator, policy analyst, and program manager. He returned home to Carpinteria, California in 2020 and for the past two year has been managing the response to COVID-19 at CSU Channel Islands.
